A pond skimmer catches floating debris before it can circulate through the pond or reach the pump. Its basket or net needs attention when leaves and other material collect, especially during storms and leaf fall. The right cleaning frequency depends on the pond and your skimmer model, not a fixed calendar alone.
Check the basket and water flow
With the equipment's instructions in hand, inspect the debris basket or net and remove accumulated leaves and twigs before they restrict water movement. Watch whether water enters the skimmer normally and whether the waterfall or return flow has slowed. If the weir door is obstructed, clear only what you can safely reach and follow the skimmer manual for any adjustment.
Clean media according to its type
Some skimmers include a filter mat or pad; others do not. Remove and clean it only as directed for that model and media. A coarse debris mat and biological media may have different cleaning needs, so avoid treating every pad as disposable or scrubbing it with a chemical cleaner. Replace damaged parts with components compatible with the skimmer.
Inspect around the pump safely
Turn off power before reaching into the skimmer, removing a pump, or clearing material from an intake. Check for stones, plant fragments, or other debris that could block flow. Adjust your routine with the season
Inspect more often when wind, rain, or falling leaves send debris into the pond. A running winter system and one shut down for freezing weather need different care; follow the skimmer and pump winter instructions. Look for damaged seals, a loose lid, cracks, or persistent water loss and seek qualified help for repairs you cannot identify safely.
