How to Keep Pond Fish Out of a Skimmer

How to Keep Pond Fish Out of a Skimmer

A skimmer collects floating debris, but a fish can sometimes follow the water into its opening. If this happens repeatedly, look at the conditions around the opening before changing the equipment.

Check the skimmer and the fish

Inspect the skimmer regularly and remove trapped debris. If you find a fish inside, handle it gently and watch for signs of stress or injury. A fish repeatedly ending up in the skimmer may need closer observation; don't assume the skimmer alone explains its behavior.

Review flow and access

Notice whether fish are being drawn toward the opening and whether they can swim away. Compare the pump's actual flow and the skimmer's operating range with their manufacturers' instructions. An overly strong draw or a blocked intake calls for a setup review. Keep the opening clear enough for the skimmer to work, and don't place loose objects where they could shift into the intake.

Before changing a door or barrier

Skimmer doors and openings vary by model. Removing a door, adding a barrier, or moving rockwork can change skimming performance and create new hazards. Follow the instructions for your specific equipment or ask a qualified pond professional to assess the installation instead of making a generic modification.

Regular checks, appropriate flow, and a clear intake are the safest starting points. For more pond-care guidance, browse the PondScape Learning Center.
