What is a Pondless Waterfall?

A pondless waterfall (also called a disappearing waterfall) is a recirculating water feature where the water disappears into an underground reservoir instead of collecting in a visible pond. AquaMatrix modules create this hidden reservoir, storing water that's pumped back up to the waterfall. You get the beauty and sound of flowing water without the maintenance, safety concerns, or space requirements of a traditional pond.

Why AquaMatrix vs. Traditional Gravel Basins:

  • More Water Storage: Holds 10x more water than gravel in the same space
  • Lighter Weight: Much easier to handle than tons of gravel
  • Easier Installation: Stack modules instead of hauling and placing gravel
  • Better Access: Easy to access pump for maintenance
  • Cleaner System: Water stays cleaner without gravel debris
  • Expandable: Add more modules anytime to increase capacity
  • Structural Integrity: Connection clips lock modules together

Multiple Applications:

Pondless Waterfalls:

  • Create underground reservoir beneath waterfall
  • Water disappears into rocks and recirculates
  • No visible pond—safer for children and pets
  • Less maintenance than traditional ponds

Disappearing Fountains:

  • Water bubbles up through decorative features
  • Disappears into gravel or decorative rock
  • Perfect for patios, courtyards, and small spaces

Bog & Wetland Filters:

  • Create biological filtration zones for ponds
  • Modules provide structure for gravel and plants
  • Water flows through for natural filtration
  • Supports aquatic plants in wetland filter beds

Connection Clip System:

  • 2 clips included to connect the two modules together
  • Clips lock modules securely for structural stability
  • Prevents modules from shifting during installation
  • Allows vertical stacking or horizontal expansion
  • Additional clips available for larger installations

Installation Overview:

  1. Excavate area for modules (slightly larger than module dimensions)
  2. Level base and add sand or gravel base if needed
  3. Place first AquaMatrix module in excavation
  4. Connect second module using included clips
  5. Install pump inside modules (access from top)
  6. Run plumbing from pump to waterfall or fountain
  7. Cover modules with landscape fabric
  8. Top with decorative rock or gravel
  9. Fill system with water and test

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many AquaMatrix modules do I need for my pondless waterfall?
A: The number of modules depends on your waterfall size and pump flow rate. As a general rule, you need enough water storage to handle 1.5-2 times your pump's flow rate per minute. For example, if your pump flows 2,000 GPH (33 gallons per minute), you need about 50-65 gallons of storage.

Q: Can I stack AquaMatrix modules on top of each other, or do they only go side-by-side?
A: Yes, you can stack AquaMatrix modules both vertically and horizontally! The connection clips work in both orientations. Stacking vertically creates a deeper reservoir in a smaller footprint—perfect when you have limited space but need more water capacity. Horizontal placement creates a wider, shallower reservoir—better for very wide waterfalls or when you have depth restrictions. Many installations use a combination—stacking 2-3 modules high in the center (where the pump sits) and single modules around the perimeter. The modular design gives you complete flexibility to configure the system for your specific site conditions.

Q: What's the advantage of AquaMatrix over just filling a hole with gravel like traditional pondless installations?
A: AquaMatrix provides dramatically better water storage in the same space—about 10 times more water capacity than gravel. A cubic foot of gravel only holds about 1.7 gallons of water in the voids between stones, while AquaMatrix modules are 90%+ open space for water storage. This means you need far less excavation, handle much less weight (gravel is extremely heavy), and get better performance. AquaMatrix also makes pump access much easier—just lift the top cover instead of digging through tons of gravel. The water stays cleaner without gravel debris, and you can expand the system anytime by adding more modules. Installation is faster and easier, and the connection clips provide structural integrity that loose gravel can't match.
