Prevent contact with the water until you know what entered it and what the substance's label says. This guide is for a decorative feature with no fish or aquatic life. Drain and rinse according to the feature instructions
For an ordinary soap spill in a feature that can be safely emptied, stop the pump using its instructions. Drain the affected water without discharging it where it could harm plants, animals, drains, or waterways; follow local disposal guidance. Rinse accessible surfaces with clean water, drain the rinse water, and repeat as needed. Check the pump vault, reservoir, gravel, and other places where water may be trapped, but do not take apart equipment beyond what its manual permits.
Refill and check before restarting
After repeated rinsing, refill using water suitable for the feature and check for lingering residue or suds. Follow the equipment instructions for restarting and confirm that the pump has adequate water and normal flow. Do not add bleach, chlorine, or another chemical to try to neutralize the soap. If suds return or the spill involved a concentrated or unknown product, stop and ask the feature manufacturer for guidance rather than assuming that clear-looking water is safe.
Prevent another spill
Keep cleaning supplies away from the reservoir and let anyone maintaining the area know where the water feature drains.
