Water and electricity require a cautious setup. A pond pump should be connected using outdoor-rated equipment and ground-fault protection appropriate for the installation. Follow local code and use a licensed electrician for wiring or outlet work.
Why use GFCI protection?
A GFCI monitors electrical flow and can disconnect power when it detects a ground fault. It is an important layer of protection around water, but it does not make damaged equipment, poor wiring, or an unsafe installation acceptable.
What about an extension cord?
An outdoor-rated extension cord may be used as a temporary measure when the product instructions and local requirements allow it. It should not become a permanent substitute for a properly installed outdoor outlet. Keep connections protected from weather, use the correct cord rating, and never use a damaged cord.
If the GFCI trips
Do not bypass it. Turn off and unplug equipment before inspecting it. Look for water intrusion, damaged cords, overloaded circuits, or a pump problem. If the cause is not obvious, stop and contact a qualified electrician or the product manufacturer.
Never work live
Do not handle plugs, outlets, cords, or pump connections with wet hands or while standing in water. Disconnect power before servicing and follow the current pump instructions.
