Winter preparation depends on your climate, the feature’s plumbing, and the pump instructions. Some systems continue running through winter, while others are shut down and drained. Choose one plan for the complete system rather than placing a timer on the pump without checking what happens to trapped water and the basin level.
If you are shutting down the feature
- Turn off power before disconnecting or servicing the pump.
- Remove the pump only as the current instructions allow.
- Inspect the pump, intake, impeller, fittings, and cord for damage or debris.
- Store the pump as directed in a location protected from freezing. Do not assume every pump should be stored the same way.
- Remove loose leaves and debris from the stream and reservoir.
- Review exposed plumbing and any low spots that could hold freezing water.
- Keep a record of where components were stored and what must be checked at spring startup.
If the feature will keep running
Follow the current pump and feature instructions for cold-weather operation. Check for ice dams, water escaping over the liner, a falling water level, blocked flow, and unsafe electrical conditions. Never force frozen components to move.
Spring restart
Reinstall or reconnect the pump according to its instructions. Fill the system to the proper level before starting it, confirm flow, and watch for leaks or unusual noise. If the pump runs dry or the feature cannot hold water, turn it off and investigate.
